What is Mercury Retrograde?

Okay, beautiful let’s talk about Mercury retrograde, because I know your group chat has already mentioned it twelve times this week and someone’s blaming it for their ex texting them.

First, the grounding fact: Mercury doesn’t actually move backward. From Earth, it appears to reverse direction in the sky because of the relative speeds of our orbits. Kind of like when you pass a slower car on the highway and it looks like it’s drifting backward. 

Astrologers have used this optical illusion for centuries as a symbol: a built in invitation to slow down, revisit, and recalibrate. Whether or not you believe it has cosmic causal power, it works beautifully as a seasonal ritual for review and that’s the lens I want you to hold it in.

Mercury rules communication, technology, travel, contracts, and the mind. So when it “retrogrades,” the metaphor practically writes itself: things in those areas get glitchy, delayed, or get a second chance to be redone properly.

The Three Phases of Mercury Retrograde

🌗 Pre-Shadow (the build-up)

This is the period usually about 2 weeks before the official retrograde start date when Mercury is approaching the exact retrograde point but hasn’t “officially” turned yet. 

Energetically, this is when you’ll feel the first wobbles: a delayed email, a weird miscommunication, a nagging feeling that something needs revisiting. Nothing’s “official” yet, but your nervous system already knows.

Life Coach translation: this is your warning bell. Pay attention to what starts feeling slightly off  that’s often exactly what the retrograde is going to ask you to look at more closely.

🌑 The Retrograde Itself (the review)

This is the main event, typically lasting about three weeks. This is not punishment time. This is review time. The universe isn’t trying to ruin your signed lease it’s asking you to double check it.

Life Coach translation: this is a re do season, not a ruin season. Anything with “re-” in front of it is fair game: review, reconsider, reconnect, revise, rest, release.

🌓 Post-Shadow (the integration)

After Mercury goes direct again, it has to travel back through the same zodiac territory it just retrograded through usually another 2 weeks. This is the part almost nobody talks about, and it’s arguably the most important. Things don’t snap back to normal the moment Mercury turns direct. You’re still integrating the lessons.

Life Coach translation: don’t rush back into “normal” the second the retrograde “ends.” Give yourself the same grace on the way out that you gave yourself on the way in.

What to Actually Watch For During Mercury Retrograde

💬 Communication
Texts get misread. Tones get misjudged. Emails go to the wrong inbox. Before you send anything emotionally loaded, sit on it for a few hours. Read it out loud. Ask yourself: am I being clear or am I being clever? Clarity over cleverness, every time, during this season.

✈️ Travel
Doublecheck bookings, check-in times, gate changes, and visa documents. Build in buffer time you normally wouldn’t bother with. This isn’t about canceling your trip… it’s about not assuming the default plan will go off without a hitch.

💔 Exes & Old Flames
This is the big one. Mercury retrograde has an uncanny reputation for resurrecting people from your past. The ex who texts “just thinking of you,” the situationship that reappears, the friend group drama from two years ago suddenly resurfacing.

Before you respond, ask: is this a genuine, healed reconnection, or is this just nostalgia wearing a costume? Not every reappearance is a sign. Some doors closed for a reason, and retrograde season has a funny way of testing whether you remember why.
